MeitY-Industry-Academia (MIA) Workshop
Building the Nation from the Ground Up Through a Three- Way Partnership Between the GOI, Global Industry, and Indian Academic Research Institutions
Purpose of the Workshop
To present final joint industry-academic research and technology workforce development proposals to build the nation with global-level research and technology workforce programs in system Design and architectures, Semiconductors, Packaging, and Systems (DSPS) with the end goal being sustainable manufacturing technologies to make India a globally competitive nation in semiconductor manufacturing.
Attendees
We expect 30 company executives or managers, 8-10 directors of IIT’s/IISc’s and VC’s, BITS, 20 faculty leads, and Shri Krishnan S, Hon. MeitY Secretary, and Shri Sushil Pal, Joint Secretary, MeitY and staff.
Rationale for the Workshop
As you know, India is emerging as a semiconductor nation, starting with semiconductor and package manufacturing plants in Gujarat and Assam states by Tata, Micron, and CG Power. This is an unparalleled accomplishment, and India should be very proud. Now that India is committed to manufacturing, the next step is how India can sustain its manufacturing to bring itself to global levels.
While the initial ISM-subsidized manufacturing lines in Gujarat and Assam are based on 1980’s technologies, the rest of the advanced world is focusing on 2030 manufacturing technologies such as optoelectronics, glass panel packaging, 3D chipset architectures, and copper-to-copper bonding. Closing this decades-long manufacturing gap is India's next grand R&D and manufacturing opportunity.
This is the reason for the workshop and the proposed 12 national industry-co development centers: to design, develop, and demonstrate next-generation technologies and educate a large number of engineers to create a workforce in these technologies in India.
Progress
We have made outstanding progress and are ready to submit 12 industry co-development center(ICC) proposals by academic faculty and industry technologists. We have identified four product sectors to focus on: computing and AI, 6G, power electronics, and IoT. We have identified 12 strategic research areas (SRA’s) to address all the technical challenges in these four product sectors. We have formed India-wide faculty teams with similar expertise.
We have identified more than 50 global companies from researchers, developers, suppliers, start-ups, manufacturers, and users from the U.S., Europe, Japan, Korea, and Taiwan who expressed interest in co-investing with the GOI. Most of these companies have already agreed to invest by joining industry consortiums in each ICC.
Outcomes of the Workshop
Plans for three-way workshop:
(a) GOI funding for infrastructure of 12 ICC’s
(b) Industry partnerships and investments and
(c) Academia to set up 12 ICC’s with industry engineers on each campus
